On Tuesday, February 14, 2018, Shaun White secured redemption from his disappointing Olympics four years ago in Sochi. His first run of the day put him in first place with a score of 94.25. White fell on one of his tricks in the second run and he ended with a score of 50. Japan native Ayumu Hirano took possession of first place after his second run, topping Shaun’s previous high with a 95.25. Hirano’s success in pulling off back-to-back 1440s, which is very hard to pull off, explains his surge to the top. This put Shaun White in a very tough spot. On his final run however, he too pulled of back-to-back 1440s, something he never achieved before. His final run was truly one for the ages and when the score of 97.75 flashed, he dropped to his knees in tears. He had Olympic redemption and won the USA their 100 gold in the Winter Olympics.
