At the 2026 Winter Olympics the unthinkable happened. The men’s USA hockey team beat Canada in the Olympics and won gold for the first time since 1980. This was an important victory for the men’s team because the Canadian team has been doubting USA and even mocking them. At the USA Four-Nations face off game on February 15, 2025, Canadian fans booed loudly while the national anthem was playing. This caused tensions to rise between the two teams and many fights have broken out since, but ultimately, the United States wins this tension battle and wins the gold.

To further USA’s success, the women’s hockey team also took victory. The women were dominant throughout the tournament, flexing wins of over 7 points, and beating Canada, their biggest rival, in both the Round-Robin tournament and in the gold match game. The gold-medal game was the closest game for the women, in which they clenched a 2-1 victory in overtime. Looking back, the Women’s team has medaled every year since its production in the year 1998. That’s 7 medals in a row!

All of this shows how USA Hockey has established itself as a premier global force, highlighted by this historic, unprecedented sweep of both of gold medals at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics. Powered by elite development programs and a deep talent pool, the U.S. women’s team continues to set records, while the men’s team snapped a long drought with an overtime victory against Canada, signaling a new era of dominance. This success, fueled by 43 NCAA-developed players, highlights a shift in international power where the U.S. is consistently competing for. and securing, the top of the podium.
Sadly, a phone call from President Donald Trump, which was supposed to be a congratulatory call to the men’s team, sparked significant controversy when a video of the interaction went viral. While on speakerphone with the men’s team, Trump invited them to his State of the Union address and quipped that he would “have” to invite the women’s team as well, or else he would “probably be impeached”. The men’s lockers room which included the FBI Director, was heard laughing at the remark, leading to public backlash and criticism from sports figures and idols.
Hopefully, the United States team resolves this peacefully, and they realize that at the end of the day they both came home victorious. Mistakes are inevitable, but it’s what you do after that really matters.
