Talented. Creative. Genre Defining. Popular. What does this describe? These are all aspects of the explosive artist Post Malone. Post Malone is a Hip-Hop and R&B artist but he describes himself as “a melting pot between country, grunge, and R&B.” Post Malone has skyrocketed to the top with his August 14, 2015 single “White Iverson,” which ended up peaking at number 14 on the Billboard Music charts. Following this success, he then signed with Republic Records.

After the success of his first album “Stoney,” Post announced in February of 2017 that he would be creating a second album, “Beerbongs and Bentleys,” intended for release in April of 2018.

In September of 2017, Post released his first single to the album “Rockstar,” featuring Atlanta rapper 21 Savage. “Rockstar” was a major success upon release and held the number 1 spot on the Billboard music charts for 8 weeks in a row. Post also released the song “Candy Paint” that was in “The Fate and the Furious” soundtrack, another huge success to promote his new album. The song references the popular comedy show “The Office” with a line talking about how much he loves paper like Michael Scott, the main character of the TV show.

On April 27, 2018 Post Malone released “Beerbongs and Bentleys” featuring the songs “Better Now,” “Psycho,” and “Paranoid.” That same day the album released, it broke the first day streaming record on Spotify with 78.7 million streams from all around the world. Beerbongs and Bentleys was popular, but was it any good?

If you are accustomed to the usual style of rap where they mumble lyrics about money, women, and drugs, then you are in for a big surprise. In his song “Better Now” he talks about how his last girlfriend broke up with him because Post was too focused on his music career and not her. His lyrics talk about the highs and lows of his life. In the song “Spoil My Night” he highlights the life of a celebrity with partying and how many people treat him like a king.

Overall, “Beerbongs and Bentleys” has received a positive reception among fans of hip hop. Many LHS students share these postivite feelings.

“Beerbongs and Bentleys is a great mix between Hip-Hop and Alternative,”  said 12th grade Ram Matt Zayas.

A few people had a more negative review of the album including 12th grader Christian Hankins, who said, “I felt this album was just alright. Post Malone’s previous album Stoney was better than this one.” Unlike the regular fans of Post Malone, the professional reviews of the album were less positive, most source including Rolling Stone which gave the album a 2/5 star rating.

Despite the poor reviews from critics, “Beerbongs and Bentleys” has the potential to go down as Hip-Hop album of the year. The album featured six top 20 songs “Better Now,” “Rockstar,” “Candy Paint,” “Psycho,” “Paranoid,” and “Spoil My Night.” The album solidified his style of music and was an improvement from his previous album. “Beerbongs and Bentleys” is one of those albums where you could listen to the whole album and hear something new in every song without getting bored. In the song “Stay,” Post throws a curve ball and brings out the acoustic guitar. Every featured artist in his album blends perfect with Post’s style and just lifts his songs up. The beats Post uses for his song are also very unique and are never those annoying beats you hear some other Hip-Hop artists use such as Lil Yachty, which will break your speakers.

Post Malone is an amazing artist who has created his own genre of Hip-Hop music. He has already had 2 very popular albums and he is set to have even greater success in the future. Post Malone has become very prominent in mainstream culture and was featured on The Late Night Show with Jimmy Fallon.  For Post it is only up from here, after his huge success of Beerbongs and Bentleys.
