The Lafayette Rams went to play Liberty Christian last Saturday at Liberty, competing for the state title. Before we talk about the game itself, we must look at the unfair standards of the game. For starters, the Rams had to travel three hours to get to the “neutral” location, while the Liberty Christian Bulldogs could walk home.
While this was a factor, were may also look at the fact that Liberty Christian is a private school, who can openly recruit. They have a recruit from Ghana, who happens to be the number three running back recruit in the entire country and is a Georgia commit. In the first half, the Bulldogs had an uncontested 21 points, all three touchdowns coming from their running back. At the half, Coach Linn gave the half time talk of his career, gassing up his rams to come back to 21-14. Just as our student section thought we had them pinned, the impossible happened. On 3rd and 15 for the Bulldogs, they ran a trick play, giving them a 40-yard touchdown to make it 28-14. The rams put up a valiant effort and looked like the better team in the second half. The rams finished out the season with three losses, but two were to private schools. VHSL needs to reconsider the regulation of private schools in the public league.
