The Resurgence of Uggs

Why Uggs continue to return to modern fashion.

Ugg boots were created in 1978. Since then, Uggs have come in and out of popularity. The Ugg company’s sales were steady from the late 1970s to the late 1990s but began to build some traction as celebrities began wearing them in the early 2000s. Celebrities like the Kardashians and Paris Hilton were spotted in the footwear and were known for pairing them with tracksuits. Uggs worn in the early 2000s were known to have longer high-tops, and a smaller sole. As we neared the 2010s, however, people opted for different types of boots. Uggs were still worn, as people began to wear Uggs with bows, but sales were still going down from their highs in the 2000s.

As quickly as they went away, Uggs made a return to the fashion scene. The short-top Uggs created a stir on TikTok, causing everyone to strive to get their hands on a pair of Uggs. Various Ugg styles exploded in sales as the company regained its popularity. These styles include the classic boot, the classic mini, the Tasman low-tops, etc. Uggs also have started being created in many different colors, different from the usual brown, tan like color they are known for. Newer colors include red, black, gray, blue, green and more. Some Uggs are even glittery. Furthermore, fuzz can be found outside of the shoes’ interior now and can be seen as layered on top of the brim of the shoe. Ribbons are also commonly on Uggs, from either the owner of the shoe, or some of the shoes are made with ribbons attached.

Uggs have created a new standard for many girls. Uggs can be linked to aesthetics created on TikTok, called the “clean-girl” aesthetic, or “granola-girl” aesthetic. These styles have become popular over TikTok this year, as fashion

fully shifts for the first time since the “indie” aesthetic was created during COVID. “Clean-girls” are the new “it-girls” on social media, promoting a minimalist style. They are known for wearing neutral colors, that many Ugg styles come in, and their minimal makeup and hair choices. “Granola-girls”, however, are known for their outdoorsy look, often stereotyped as hikers and wearing earthy tones.

These fluffy-top Uggs are gaining popularity as the colder months move in.

So, what is the big deal behind these shoes? Why do they cost anywhere from one hundred to two hundred dollars? Ugg boots have been known to last a very long time, and it seems like they will continue to come in and out of the fashion world. They are known for their fuzzy interiors, and mildly colored exteriors. The Ugg company has even began branching out into other styles of shoes other than different forms of boots. Who knows what’s next for these timeless shoes?
