A look inside a popular summer pastime

The Jamestown beach sparkles at dusk.

It’s so close to the summer, only a matter of a few weeks left to go! The best part is almost all of our SOL’s and exams are over with. Now, all everyone is talking about is the beach: A place where students go to dive in the clear blue ocean or to make a sandcastle in the sand; to have fun with their friends and families or to have a party. Also, who said the fun is just at the beach? Many students at Lafayette High School are just as excited to go shopping for bathing suits with their friends. A lot of the students are planning to go to there this summer and over these next few weekends. LHS Sophomore Julia Norcross said, “I’ve always gone to the beach every summer with either friends or family.” More than a handful of LHS students are happy that it is finally hot enough to take a dip in the ocean.

Even though we all go to the ocean for different reasons, it’s still a special place. Personally, I go to seashore to listen to the waves while I read a good book. A few of my peers share the same opinion, Bryce Beech, Sophomore, said, “I look forward to going to the beach so that I can read a book and jump into the water then go back to the book.” Of course, not all of LHS students go to the ocean just to read. Others enjoy swimming in the water or building sandcastles. The beach tends to be a stress-free environment for people of all ages, who relish in the ocean breeze and the warm sand.

Although coastline itself is fun, sunsets on it are the best. After a long day of fun, watching the sunlight hit the water just right is something I’ve always looked forward to. At night it’s even better, which is usually the time to relax by the fireplace, telling stories of how school is almost over and plans for the future. No wonder LHS students are looking forward to going! Hanging with friends and bonding with them is the best part. In my experience, seashore has always been soothing and unbelievably fun. Some students, like Bryce Beech, are going to oceanfront with a friend that they haven’t seen in while. He is going this summer with a friend from Germany, who he hasn’t seen in forever. Beech said, “We haven’t seen each other in awhile for I’m going to take him to the beach this summer to make his trip worth wild.” With unlimited things do with games that are different but still fun. For example: playing sports such as football or volleyball. Another popular game consists of competing to see who can swim the fastest or hold their breath longest. No wonder Beech is bringing his friend to the beach! Another one of my favorite things about there is that everyone is always making fun and unique games. Each one more different than the last, yet still fun and entertaining.

While there are students that love the beach, there are also students who would rather go to the pool. Destiny Jones, LHS Sophomore, said, “I hate the beach mostly because of the sand. The sand gets everywhere and it’s too hard to wash it off.” Angelica Woods, LHS sophomore, argues, “There is a huge crowd if go to the beach at the wrong time and I love the beach just not the crowd.” While these students have a point and their peers agree with them, many students just can’t give it up. Of course, there are many people who are choosing not to go there and instead go to a pool. It does have its challenges like, the sunburns or the salt in the ocean. However, people just look past it because they love oceanfront.

Even though the beach has flaws, it’s still one of the top places to go during the summer. Looking past its flaws, it is still an amazing place to hang out with friends and family. It is a chance to relax and have fun and the best part is that hardly anyone is ever bored at the beach. For the most part, many students are so happy that it is finally hot enough to go and they can’t get enough of it. Everyone is just dying to get into the water after all it is getting hotter now.

The beach is one of the greatest vacation destinations for people all over the world; a place where you can have fun and relax with friends and family. LHS students are just counting the minutes until they can go to seashore. Are you ready for the beach as well?
