Reporters at Lafayette High School spent the past few weeks finding and interviewing the staff members. I had the honor of questioning guidance counselor, Katie Rutherford. Here’s how it went!

Q: Where are you from originally? 

A: Katie Rutherford was born in Michigan and spent part of her childhood in Mississippi.

Q: How long have you been teaching? How long have you been at Lafayette? 

A: This year is Katie Rutherford’s 24th year in education, and fourth year at Lafayette High School. Her first three years of teaching she spent teaching k-12 vocal music.

Q: Where did you go to college? 

A: Rutherford attended Michigan State University where she received her music degree, followed by Mississippi State University for counseling and Virginia Peninsula Community College for her Emergency Medical Technician certification.

Q: What subject do you teach? 

A: Rutherford works in school counseling.

Q: Why did you become a teacher?

A: Katie Rutherford explains that her older brother was a teacher and she followed in his footsteps. She decided to stay in teaching because she felt it was “the right thing to make a difference”.

Q: Do you have any advice for young people today? 

A: “Don’t assume that everyone older than you is an idiot,” she says.

Q: If you could meet anyone from any time in the past, who would you choose and why?

A: Rutherford would meet Amelia Airhart if she had the chance. She explains that she likes Airhart’s love for adventure, and how she was very influential in blazing the trail for women moving forward.

Q: If you were stranded on a remote desert island, which 3 other LHS teachers would you choose to have there with you? 

A: If she were to pick three teachers to live with her, she would choose Boyer, Mccory, and Mincher.
