March Madness is one of the most exciting sports events in the United States. It is the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament, and it happens every year in March and early April. 68 college teams compete to win a national championship. The tournament is single elimination, which means one loss and you’re out. That’s why each game is high energy and intense.
The tournament starts with Selection Sunday (March 15). This is when teams find out if they made the tournament and see what seed they are. Teams are ranked from 1-16 in four different regions. The high ranked teams are expected to win. This year the favorites are Duke, Arizona, and Michigan, but the higher seeds don’t always win. The most exciting part of March Madness is the upsets. When low ranked teams beats a high ranked team, it surprises everyone and makes it the tournament more exciting and fun to watch.
People call these surprise teams “Cinderella” teams. These teams are not expected to go far but some do, like the No. 11 seed NC State (2024) who went to the Final Four for the first team since 1983. More notable teams are the 2022 Saint Peter’s Peacocks who were ranked 15th defeated No. 2 Kentucky, No. 7 Murray State, and No.3 Purdue, but they would lose to No. 8 North Carolne in the Elite Eight, and the 2006 No. 11 George Mason who beat No. 6 Michigan State, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 7 Wichita State, and No. 1 UConn but then lost to No. 3 Florida in the Final Four.
Another big part of March Madness is filling out brackets. Millions of people fill them out every year. Friend’s families, schools and offices often have competitions to see who gets the most games right. Even people who don’t normally watch basketball join in because it’s fun and exciting.
March Madness is also important because it shows off talented college players. Some players become very famous after playing well in the tournament such as Steph Curry who brought Davidson to the national spotlight, Carmelo Anthony who led Syracuse to their first title as a freshman in 2003, Kyle Guy a clutch performer in UVA’s first title run in 2019, and Jimmer Fredette who became a national sensation for his scoring ability. Many NBA stars first became well known during March Madness.
March Madness is about excitement, surprises, and competition. Since one loss sends you home, every game matters. This is what makes March Madness so special and fun to watch to see what team cuts down the nets.
