Ilia Malinin stepped foot onto the ice for his first Olympic games this month. Ilia is a two-time world champion figure skater from Fairfax Virginia. Nicknamed the Quad God, Malinin was expected to place gold. At the 2026 Olympic Games Ilia had a beautiful routine that broke records and won gold for the team event. After his first two skates, Ilias’s popularity skyrocketed. Not only is he the only skater to have ever landed a quad axel in competition, but he is also the first one to land a backflip in competition. With the rise in fame overnight, there was also a rise in pressure. everyone assumed he was going to win gold easily. with that amount of pressure Ilia had a rough performance during the men’s free skate. Ilia shockingly moved down to 8th place, shocking the world.

After social media blew up with reactions to the shocking placement, Ilia was chosen to perform at the Exhibition Gala at the end of the Olympics. Keeping pretty quiet since the loss, Ilia then took the stage. With no points or medals on the line, Ilias Skate seemed to have a message. While performing to the rap song “FEAR”, Malinin blew everyone away with his emotional performance. with his performance containing his Quad Axel and Iconic Backflip, Ilia owned the stage. The song holds a major message, repeating the words “is this what you wanted?”. Ilias message was clear, and he had made his comeback. This performance was a beautiful commentary on his Olympic Games experience. “This message and this program and song really spoke to me and really represented how I’ve been feeling for the past year leading up to these Olympics. There’s been so much pressure, so much doubt, and everything around me: the noise, the media, the people, the environment, has been so overwhelming.” said Malinin. He spoke out the day after to remind the world that he is not done, and one loss doesn’t take away all that you’ve won. He reminded the world that he would be competing at the world championships next month.
