Meet Hugh Beard! Did you know that he has been at Lafayette for over 20 years?

INTERVIEW

Q– What do you do/teach here?

A– AP Environmental Science, AP Biology, and Field Biology.

Q– Why did you come to LHS and how many years have you been here?

A– I came to Lafayette in the fall of 1994. If my calculations are correct, that makes this my 29th year.

Q– What college did you go to?

A– I have degrees from Virginia Tech, VCU, and ODU

Q– Why did you decide to teach?

A– I am not really sure. After my first degree, I worked in forestry research and in construction. Neither felt like my calling. I guess I figured that I liked school, and I liked science, so why not blend the two together. As it turns out, it was a career that stuck, though there were some hiccups at the beginning.

Q– What do you love about your job?

A– I love the fact that no two days are alike. I also like the creative aspect of planning lessons and activities. Of course, I also like working with students.

Q– What are your hobbies?

A– I do a lot of birding. I enjoy biking, hiking, paddling, and camping. I guess I love to be outside. I also enjoy reading.

Q– Cats or dogs?

A– We have always had cats. We are down to one at the present. I love dogs, but they don’t fit in well with a lot of our outdoor activities. Not that cats do either, but they are much easier to leave behind when we go on trips.

Q– What is your favorite color?

A– Purple used to be my favorite color, but as I have gotten older, I have become fond of gray. I guess it sort of fits.
