Colonial Williamsburg Christmas is another beloved event that many enjoy.  Colonial Williamsburg brings lots of people into Williamsburg to learn about Williamsburg’s history and enjoy our Christmas spirit. Colonial Williamsburg originated in 1699 and was one of the first planned cities. It is perfect for those who love learning history. The Grand Illumination is a festival that takes place on December 1st.

The Grand illumination is the lightning of a Christmas tree and fireworks displays from the Capitol and the Palace. People can visit the Historic attractions and see all of the special decorations throughout the area. The Illumination is the firing of guns and fireworks. It celebrates the reigning sovereign, military victories, or the arrival of a new colonial governor. After the lightning you can go enjoy the musical performances on lots of different stages through the streets.
