Nipsey Hussle: A Lost Legend
The music world mourns Nipsey Hussle, murdered during personal altercation
Nipsey Hussle’s real name is Ermias Asghedom. He was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 15, 1985. Up until 2005 before the release of his mixtape ‘Slauson Boy,’ no one knew his name. Nipsey went on to release a mixtape ‘Bullets Ain’t Got No Name’ in 2008 and in 2009 released a single debut ‘Hussle in the Hous’ which started getting some movement behind his name.
When Nipsey was a teen he got involved with the Crips gang. Nipsey talked about being proud that he “made it out” showing that when he joined he felt that he was trapped. However, later in life he realized he’s in a position to help people and decided to start channeling his energy more positively. In one interview the rapper says, “In my section of the Crenshaw District, Los Angeles in the Rollin’ 60s, none of my peers survived. None of my peers avoided prison,” he said. “None of ’em. Everybody got bullet wounds and felonies and strikes. So to make it out mentally stable and not in prison and not on drugs, that’s a win.”
When asked about Nipsey’s death, Lafayette senior Christian Hankins stated “It’s sad to see, he was bettering himself but still got killed”. The young, 33 year old rapper had been shot by Eric Holder, over a personal dispute between the two men. With no known motive, it’s hard to be able to say why Nipsey was killed. It could have been out of cold blood, or maybe something personal.
Lafayette senior Markus Terhorst said, “It will be hard to understand and accept that he’s really gone. His death’s a big impact, it’s sad to see him go.” Nipsey had plans in place to give back to his community and help make it a better place to live in. If you didn’t know much about these guys one may assume they’re thugs or criminals who got what they deserved. It seems like rappers have been killing each other for so long. The most iconic deaths in rap history date back to Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur. The two men had been friends at one point but ended up having beef over a diss in one of Tupac’s songs. Many people believe Biggie killed Tupac because a week after Tupac was fatally shot Biggie released a song titled
“Who Shot Ya”. Many speculate the diss got under Biggies skin so much that he decided to take action into his own hands and take another man’s life. Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur and the young Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, better known as XXXTentacion deserved better outcomes in their life. Rapper XXXTentacion was killed in a similar fashion as Nipsey. He was fatally shot at the age of 20, in a robbery at a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida on June 18, 2018. His Louis Vuitton bag containing $50,000 was stolen from him after 4 men had taken his life. He had his enemies but was trying to turn his world around into a more positive look on life. A lot of people sadly didn’t like X because of his music style and questionable actions, but it’s impossible to deny that the young man was trying to find himself in this world and spread love to all his fans, even to his haters. It’s tragic to see so many young lives being taken over money, greed or hate, and one day hopefully people will be able to make music and not have to worry about losing their life to a thug with a gun for some money.
One day everyone will be able to spread positive love and make quality music as a community rather than killing each other hoping to reach the spot light. It’s horrible to see any young person who clearly has so much life left in them killed over a miniscule problem. Nipsey Hussle is and always will be a major influence on the rap genre, legends never die and neither will the name, Nipsey Hussle.
