Super Bowl Commercials
NFL Wins Commercials On It’s Big Night
The first Sunday of February brings one the most anticipated Television events of the year. Sure there is the Super Bowl that day in which the best football teams from their respective conferences compete for the championship, but more importantly there are Super Bowl commercials. This year was disappointing however, with more attention paid to the movie trailers released than to the advertisements. There were some touchdowns, namely the NFL’s commercial recreating the Dirty Dancing scene with Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr., but most were misses wide left, like Stephen Gostowski’s field goal attempts.
One popular commercial was for Amazon’s Alexa. In this commercial Alexa loses her voice and different celebrities like Rebel Wilson, Gordon Ramsey, and Cardi B step in to see if they can help. Hearing the celebrities respond with quips to the surprise of those asking the questions was very funny to watch.

One of the more genius advertisements started off looking like a possible remake of Crocodile Dundee starring Danny McBride and Chris Hemsworth, but took a twist midway through and ended up being an Australian Travel Agency ad. It drew us in with the hopes of a movie, but was able to keep us because of the parody, as well as a few cameos from Margot Robbie and the original Crocodile Dundee, Paul Hogan.

My personal favorite is a commercial from the NFL itself. Showing off their new rules allowing team touchdown celebrations, and starring players from the New York Giants, the NFL created a commercial with Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. practicing a celebration for next season. This wasn’t a normal celebration though, they recreated the dance from Dirty Dancing, even having Beckham launching himself in Manning’s arms.

While there were some good commercials there were others that needed more work. One of these was the Ram commercial using a sermon by Dr. Martin Luther King. King often spoke against corporations, so using an excerpt from one of his Civil Rights’ speeches seemed a little off-beat.

The worst commercial was probably the one for Scientology. Enough said. Actually, no: advertising a religion during one of the biggest TV events of the year is more than a little off-putting. Imagine the backlash if the Catholic Church had run an ad during the Super Bowl.
