For the first time in about four years, Lorde has announced her new album and released the leading single of the album. The song is called “What Was That” and was released on April 24th. The announcement of the album itself was on April 30th. The new album is going to be called “Virgin” and is set to be released on June 27 of this summer. The song quickly rose to popularity and is now on the “Top 10” ARIA singles chart.
When I first heard the song, I had my Spotify playlist on a random station, so I was not purposely looking for the song. After I heard the song, I loved it and immediately dived into all of Lordes albums. Her new single has been on repeat ever since I heard it.
The overall theme of the song is about dealing with a past relationship, and the personal growth that comes with breaking up with somebody that you truly love. An example of this is the lyric “Yeah Im missing you, and all the things we used to do.” This line of the song shows that she is expressing the sadness she feels because of that missing person in her life. The song’s lyrics also show that she is questioning if the relationship had ever meant anything to the other person. This is shown in many lyrics in the song. An example is the lyric “Since I was 17 I gave you everything, now we wake from a dream, baby what was that. That lyric brings us back to the title of Lorde’s song, showcasing the main point of her new song.

Lordes new song has such a powerful meaning, and the lyrics that she uses to portray that are great. Lorde does collaborated with other creators to create her songs, and she also creates some on her own. For this particular release she collaborated with John E. Turner to create the song. Lorde is a brilliant song writer, and has much more to come.
