As opening day kicked off, Paul Skenes took the mound for the Pirates of Pittsburgh, PA. Facing off against the marlins, who they played on opening day and swept last season, hopes were high for the Buccos. As the 2025 Pirates walked off the field though, fans of the Pirates were less than pleased.

Paul Skenes had a very good start, as he gave up only 1 Earned Run in 5.1 innings, however as usual with the Pirates bullpen, they ended up blowing a 4-1 lead, with the Marlins scoring 1 in the 6th, 2 in the 8th and getting walked off on in the 9th. The rest of the series, as well as the season so far, has not been very good.
The Pirates are the first team since (ironically) the 1924 Pirates to be walked off in all of their first 3 losses. This is an embarrassment to the fans of this great team. The Pirates, who have had 1 winning season in the last 9 years, are one of the worst teams in the MLB by record. As of writing, they are currently 1-5 and have dropped 2 to the Rays, who are currently playing in the Yankees Spring Training stadium after their stadium, Tropicana Field, was destroyed in last year’s hurricane.
2024 NL Rookie of the Year, SP Paul Skenes, seems to be the only sparkle of hope in the dying Pittsburgh sky, as he is coming off of an amazing Opening Day start, and is starting again after taking a longer-than-usual break to allow Pitcher Thomas Harrington to make his MLB Debut, where he gave up 6 Earned Runs in only 4 innings of work, giving him a season ERA of 13.50.

Some hope is on the horizon, though as CP David Bednar has been called down to AAA, after being walked off on 2 times in 3 appearances, hopefully him being sent down can help him get back to how he was back in 2021 where he was an All-Star and represented the USA at the World Baseball Classic.
