Last weekend, Lafayette Model United Nations led by Madame Moore attended the William and Mary Highschool Conference. They had one pair place in the awards for their committee- John and Hamilton. Congratulations to them, and here are further details sand personal remarks regarding the conference.
The William and Mary conference began on Friday, November 15th with an opening ceremony. Multiple renowned alumni of William and Mary spoke at the ceremony to open the conference and further inspire young delegates for the weekend. Members of Lafayette Model UN considered this their first real conference- and the nerves were present at the ceremony. Following the opening, members separated in their committees and began to speak. A member of the SPECPOL (Special Political and Decolonization) committee- Mia Kawasaki said, “I was really nervous at first, but when I spoke for the first time I felt better; my nerves settled down.” After opening remarks in committees, the work truly began. Delegates in committees worked until 10pm that night on communicating, executing diplomacy, and crafting resolution papers thoughtfully. Each trying to solve their own global issues modeled after the United Nations.
Although, there were some fictional committees as well;
A member of the Dune: Special Operations Committee, Xavier Jones says- “participating in a fictional committee offered new skills and long-lasting friendships, I went not expecting to have fun, but I did.” Saturday was truly the main day of hard work. Delegates spoke and worked most of the day with only breaking for lunch and the delegate dance later on the evening. Saturday was when the knit and grit of the committees truly happened and leaders in committees formed resolutions. Attempting to pass them posed as a threat, though. Delegates all held strong opinions as they represented their own individual countries and held strong ideas. This led to some serious issues in trying to resolve problems throughout Saturday.
On a positive note, Saturday ended in an amazing dance where all delegates and countries came together to have a fun time. Lafayette had a great time especially. Music was blasted, conversation bubbled, and friendships formed. Following that- delegates were tired and headed home to rest up for Sunday (the final day of conference). Sunday wrapped up the conference amazingly with a closing ceremony and awards. Talented individuals gathered in the Williamsburg Lodge to earn recognition and end the conference. In all, it was an amazing experience for all delegates from Lafayette involved!
