Most students don’t pay attention to Spirit Week themes anymore or participate, why? Some teens find it boring, repetitive, uninteresting, stupid, or difficult to do alone. Schools need better ideas for events like Spirit Week. Not just ugly sweater day, or duo day. Schools need fresh and creative themes like Meme Day, Beach Day, Nerd Day, Dress Your Type Day, or Senior Day. Some ideas could be used for Spirit Week, ideas that are fun, modern, trendy, and more appealing and aren’t boring or used too often. Making a change into a small thing like Spirit Week could make students look forward to more events at school.
Some students don’t participate because they don’t have a best friend at school, and they have no one to partner with. The lack of accessibility to these themes is one of the reason Spirit Week isn’t a popular for students to participate in. One recommendation is to pick ideas that a person could do by themselves, so they won’t feel left out when they see someone else at school participating.
To involve students in the process of the themes, Lafayette could have a ballot that students could submit ideas. Having other students put their creative ideas could bring a lot of options to choose from, making it less stressful for students to think about themes to use. It increases the likelihood of themes being well received.
When the themes are decided, the school should actively post them both posted on social media and
through visible display around school. Ideas for the students who want to be involved could be used for those themes. For example: For Nerd Day post a picture of something similar to what a nerd looks like, giving students an idea of what they should wear on that day. Or post a list of ideas that could be used for costume day. When students see the list they will have a good example/idea they could try for those days. Making it easier for students who can’t come up with what to wear.
By addressing these challenges and looking into creative solutions, Spirit Week could be an opportunity to connect and have fun making students begin to like school and want to come to school, making students feel comfortable enough to participate in Spirit Week.
