It’s official. On March 21st of 2025, Disney will release into theaters, “Snow White.” It’s a lot to take in. Everyone is giving it a mix of bad and good comments, but there is a lot of controversy with this movie-and it hasn’t even come out yet!
According to IMDb, this movie has reached over one million dislikes- for the trailer! A lot of people are saying it’s because of who is playing as Snow White that everyone is being so controversial about this movie. It took $209 million just to make it, and it just might not make the amount of money that the producers thought it would, but we’ll see next year.
The controversial problems in this are that, well, one, the actress, Rachel Zegler, is starring as Snow White. This is an issue for most people because the character herself, Snow White, is supposed to have skin as white as snow, or a very similar skin color to snow, but the producers who made this movie had a Latina actress, so that attracted a decent amount of controversy. Disney is already on thin ice for getting rid of Mickey Mouse as the main mascot, that has been around for almost 100 years now, but when Disney started making more live-action movies, I think a lot of people only watched them out of boredom, or just to criticize.
Two, you should note, that the title instead of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves“, it’s just “Snow White.” They thought that they should change it from dwarves to either companions or just leave it out altogether. The title, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” has been around since 1937- maybe earlier, because of the Brothers Grimm fairytales. Disney decided that they should change the word “dwarves” because they, one, had an actor with dwarfism, so they didn’t want that to be offensive towards the actor, and two, they didn’t want a bad image of making “fun” of people with dwarfism. I don’t think people made it a big deal back then… So why is this a problem now?
…It’s 2024, that’s why- Everyone makes everything a problem.
A third reason for all of this controversy is that Rachel Zegler had some pretty controversial comments. According to a Forbes article, “Zegler is known to talk off the cuff when promoting her films, speaking with blunt humor instead of bland PR speak, having joked that she took a role in Shazam 2 because she “needed a job.” While promoting Snow White last year, Zegler made a series of offhand comments in which she playfully mocks the original animation.” Those comments were talked about all over TikTok, accusing Zegler of “hating” Snow White and letting a “pseudo-feminist” play the leading/main role of the movie.
Then you have the CGI problem. Obviously, there is a huge amount of CGI in the movie, but there are… I guess we’ll call them “rumors,” about the dwarves being CGI as well, instead of having actors. I don’t think that should happen, and people with dwarfism aren’t all that happy…It honestly takes them out of a job, and it takes the magic of it out of the movie for little, or younger kids. I feel like if producers keep putting more and more CGI into movies, then it will completely take over at some point, not having actors and actresses for future movies, shows, or any type of film. Some kids have dreams of becoming an actor/actress, but if the CGI parts get more and more into movies, then there will be no point in paying people to act but instead pay people to put CGI into movies.
So, how do you think the movie will turn out? We’ll see what happens when it drops in theaters next year!
