Every year, as soon as November rolls around, we hear the same complaints: “It’s too early for Christmas!” But honestly, it’s never too early. In fact, starting the Christmas season earlier is a good thing. Christmas is arguably one of the best holidays by a fair margin. Christmas is not just that one day, it’s about the holiday season as a whole. It brings a sense of joy to such a cold gloomy winter. It’s a time for fun, giving, and spending time with people we care about. With everything going on recently, a little Christmas cheer is enough to brighten anybody’s spirits.
Starting Christmas early means more time to enjoy everything that comes with it! The decorations hung up everywhere, the music playing softly in the background as you enter a store, and the feeling of togetherness brought by the holiday. It gives us a chance to slow things down and focus on what really matters to us, rather than being lost in the stress and rush of the end of the year, and a break from the weight of deadlines and assignments and gives you what feels like a fresh start to the new year.
Some people say that starting Christmas early takes away from its magic and distracts from Thanksgiving. They are just a bunch of Scrooges! Thanksgiving is a holiday during the Christmas season. Making it only necessary to celebrate on the fourth Thursday of November, the day it was given. Yes, I agree that Thanksgiving is important, but the argument that it needs to have an exclusive spotlight doesn’t hold up. Thanksgiving lacks the festivities that it needs to have its spotlight. Christmas, on the other hand, holds decades of universal tradition. It is key to our society through how much emphasis the media places on it. So, Christmas deserves to be celebrated much earlier than it has been in the past.
For instance, at my house we start decorating the first day of November, putting up the tree with all of our favorite ornaments, hanging the lights up outside of the house, and just really getting into the Christmas. To add to that, it’s not just the decorations themselves, it’s the whole process, that togetherness with your family while you hang up lights and decorate the tree can really just give someone a real feeling of love and joy. Christmas time always helps my family, and I feel so joyful and peace.
