Recently, the Model United Nations (MUN) club at Lafayette High School hosted an exciting, exclusive-to-LHS conference. For all participating students, the evening was a first: a conference focused on an imaginary crisis-the assassination of President Franklin D. Roosevelt-that put a spin on fast-moving events filled with backstabbing and massive plot twists.
In a double delegate format, a pair of students represented one country through this chaotic scenario that unfolded amidst the murder of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. While the delegates were working on finding the mystery behind the assassination, bizarre elements came forth: alien involvement, more murders, and the emergence of cyborgs. This unplanned mixture of history and science fiction caused chaos within the crisis simulation.
The drive of this conference further pushed the students not only to debate strongly but also to think critically and collaboratively when confronted with absurdity. Out-of-the-box thinking would have to be employed by the delegates to devise newer ways of recreating order out of pandemonium-all in the spirit of diplomacy and cooperation embodied in the MUN. It was a very successful conference, showing creativity and adaptability on the part of the students at Lafayette High School in a fun and chaotic atmosphere.
