In an effort for improvement of student accountability and school safety, a series of new rules were put in place this year at LHS. From cellphone policies that have been made stricter to the closing off of certain bathrooms during certain times, the actions have changed the dynamics of the school among students, teachers, and parents alike.
Perhaps one of the biggest changes, in general, this year has to do with the cellphone policy while being at school. As per the new rules, mandated by the governor, students are not allowed to use their phones during classes. This is compared to all the past years where, during free time, students had more freedom with their devices during class time.
Besides cellphone limitations, LHS has also begun locking down some bathrooms during various times of the school day. The move comes after concerns over unsupervised areas where students like to congregate—often resulting in vandalism and other hazards. It is the administration’s hope that by limiting its use during class time, they will be able to deter misuse and clear the halls of unnecessary traffic.
Another rule introduced is the no-headphones policy at school, which a little bit of it is hard for some students to adapt to. That is because previously, headphones were allowed during movement from one class to another or in some cases on personal work. According to the new policy, the use of wireless headphones has been banned, and even wired headphones are not allowed unless the teacher allows them in relation to an educational purpose.
This is to ensure communication and also that students are not too complacent during the school day.
