The NPS reported that there were no survivors the day of the crash. After the plane crashed into the wooded area, it then caught fire, where it was extinguished by the local fire departments.
An NTSB safety board member said that the plane had crashed while attempting a second landing, after an unsuccessful first landing.
Officials say that the flight took off from Dare County Regional Airport, and was following the correct flight pattern to attempt a second landing. The victims have already been identified, with the 4 adults (aged 31, 39, 43, and 44) being named, while the 5th victim, a 6-year-old child still remaining unnamed. The Wright Memorial Park and the Airport reopened on Tuesday, while the investigation is still going on. Footage of the crash has already been released, captured by a passing car’s dashcam. NTSB officials say that the preliminary report should come out 10 days after the crash, with the factual report releasing in about nine to twelve months.
