This past Thursday, the Rams volleyball team traveled to Bruton High School to face the reigning class-2A runner-up Panthers. I had a chance to interview a few players before as well as after the game, and this team does have the energy and potential to be great. They may have lost 3 sets to none, however, there were positives throughout the game, the Rams’ defense really came together in the final set, and the offense seemed to start firing on all cylinders.
I spoke with Coach K before the game and she stated, “The girls have worked hard we’ve changed our lineup and hopefully everything works out the way it needs to work out.” I believe this, as last year the Rams had a very rough season, going 0-20, an entirely new coaching staff, paired together with a change in attitude for this Rams team may be just what they needed. Even the team seemed to be in high spirits after this game, captain Cheyanne Regan claims the Rams have played stronger than they have in previous years, and she was proud of their performance. Emma Duncan, another Junior claimed that they will beat Smithfield this upcoming Tuesday to snap the Rams losing streak that has stretched since 2021. The younger players on this squad also seem to be a key component to what the team believes to be a “fresh start” as stated by senior Alienor Stanley. One of these players is Freshman Laurel Gray, she seemed to be very anxious, yet accepting of the challenge Coach K has put on her, being one of the only freshmen in the starting lineup on Thursday. I think this game will help these ladies learn and gain experience, as well as figure a lot of things out about their identity as a team. Will they rise to the occasion? Only time will tell, be on the lookout for more news on these Rams on their conquest through their season.
