Lafayette Basketball from Williamsburg Virginia had a little bit of a rough start to the season but picked it
up a notch towards the end with some big wins over New Kent High school, Bruton high school twice and Grafton once. Lafayette’s basketball team finished at the top of the bay river district finishing right next to Grafton tied for the one spot. In the upcoming weeks Lafayette will face tough challenges coming up in the playoffs where they will play in the regional quarter finals where they hope to end up making it to states and eventually winning it all. Jarquez Garret has been the leader for the Lafayette rams throughout this season where he averages 20 points per game and is the leading scorer for the team. A few other key players who have played very vital roles in this year’s season are Asa Fehrenbach, Shabreezy, Wheez Santos, and Brady Kreamer. All of these players have played huge roles in the success of the rams in the past few weeks. Coach Piggott is going to utilize these players to try and make a playoff run and make history for Lafayette.
Bruton’s basketball team has been a force in the bay river district, putting up good fights against Lafayette both times and also putting up good games against Grafton and New Kent. The first Lafayette vs Bruton game was at Lafayette where it was a back-and-forth game that finished with a crazy buzzer beater by Lafayette’s
own Shamar who hit the game winning corner three. The second game between Bruton and Lafayette was not such a close game. Lafayette pulled out early with some big buckets from Quez and Asa who never let Bruton get back in the game with a final score of 76-69. In this game Quez had 28 points and Asa had 18, leading the team to victory. Lafayette split with both Grafton and New Kent. The first game against Grafton was a heartbreaking loss for the Rams where they lost on a game winning layup, they came back and beat the clippers at their place 67-63 in a very tight game. The Rams also lost their first game against New Kent 75-71 in a nail bitter that went to overtime with a game tying shot from then again Shamar himself. The rams came back from that loss and won the next game at home against New Kent with a fairly one-sided game that ended with a score of 73-61 where almost everyone on the Lafayette roster played and scored a point.
The Playoff picture for the Rams is a fairly rough road if they want to make it to the states. The first game of their playoff run with be on Tuesday February 20th where they hope to win and move onto the next round in the regional playoffs where they will most likely play Lake Taylor in the championship. The Rams hope to make a run in the playoffs and make history.
