This past Saturday, December 9th, the Lafayette Wrestling team participated in the Colon Baker Classic wrestling tournament at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia.
While there were a lot of hard-fought matches, and a lot of wins, as well as losses, the Rams placed 9th overall. “The team performed well overall, I’m pretty sure everyone left with a win under their belt.” Said captain Christian Gordy, Gordy placed 2nd in the 175-pound weight division, and the senior was close to winning the tournament, unfortunately, injury prevented him from finishing the final match. The final standings for the Rams were:
Caleb Gentry, a 132-pound Junior placed 4th in his weight class.
Cooper Coleman, a 113-pound Sophomore placed 6th in his weight class.
Xavier Hurley, a 120- pound freshman placed 7th in his weight class.
Ryder Allen, a 138-pound Junior placed 9th in his weight class.
Teavyon Ellison, a 144 pound Junior placed 10th in his weight class.
Joshua Baum, a 157 pound Sophomore placed 6th in his weight class.
Tyson Lasker, a 190 pound Junior placed 10th in his weight class.
Lucas Chadwick, a 165 pound sophomore placed 6th in his weight class.
Overall pulling in 75 points, the Rams have been slowly improving, as this is only the 2nd tournament they have participated in through the 2023-24 season. In past years Lafayette has boasted one of the better teams in the area, winning the “Best of the Burg” tri-meet in the past 10 years. Lafayette also has two of their best wrestlers finally making their return to the mat; Heavy-Weight Elijah Seay, and 144 pounder Joel Smith are returning from the gridiron, as Lafayette has completed their football season.
The next meet will be Wednesday, December 13th at Denbigh high school, a Tri-meet between Lafayette, Peninsula Catholic, and Denbigh will take place.
Looking forward, Lafayette seems to have a bright season ahead of them, it will all come down to if these young wrestlers can pull everything together by the time Regionals, and or States comes around. Only time will tell what is in store for these Rams.
