Marta Is Now Playing in the NWPL
Marta Vieira da Silva, a woman’s professional Soccer player, who plays both in the NWPL (National Women’s Professional League) and for the Brazilian national team, has recently signed with NWPL team The Orlando Pride which is a team in the NWSL. Marta has played professional soccer in the U.S. before, but left a few years ago to play in Sweden. The NWPL and The Orlando Pride are very happy to have Marta, one of the greatest players of all time, back in the USA.
Marta, at age 31, has had an amazing career. She has been named the FIFA World Player of the year five times, and played professionally is the U.S., in Europe (Sweden), and the Brazil. She has also played in both the World Cup and the Olympics multiple times. She was playing for Rosengard in Sweden, but recently left them and terminated her contract, after they lost to Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals. Under her new contract she will make the highest salary that a foreign player can receive in the NWPL, which is 41,000 dollars, while continuing to make money from endorsements which was a huge part of the negotiating process to get her in the U.S. The Orlando Pride coaches believe that one reason Marta considered her current team was because her sponsors would be happier with her in a bigger market, like the one in the U.S., rather than Sweden. Marta has been so successful in the game, that she is able to choose what type of life she wants with her career and where it is going to be.
Her contract with The Orlando Pride covers the next two years and has a pending third year as well. The coaches believe she will bring a new energy and talent to the soccer club that will increase the support of their fans, and help them win the next few years. Marta is a talented forward who excels in scoring goals and running the offense. The Orlando coaches expect her to bring them to the top, as well as help the development of the American league and their own club. They also think because of her presence, many other high level players will come play for Orlando, and also for other teams in the NWPL, in the long run pointing the best players to the NWPL.
Marta went right to work when she got to The Pride. She immediately practiced with the team and was able to play in the season opener, and has played with the club in every game of their season so far. Many people predict that Marta is the right person to guide this team and the league to future success, and that she will find tons of success of her own the next two seasons.
