Picture this, you’re in your house making dinner after a hectic week maybe even getting ready for bed. It was a warmer night than usual, yet it was still chilly. Suddenly, you hear what you thought was fireworks. You wave it off thinking the neighborhood kids were messing around again, this was Portsmouth after all. After another 15 minutes you see lights from outside your window. The police were here, they knocked on your door and question you, later you find out there was a shooting.

On Saturday, February 11th, there was a shooting on 4000 Block Cedar Lane in Portsmouth. Wavy News states 911 was called at exactly 8:37 pm after an anonymous neighbor heard gun shots through their kid’s rooms. According to a Wavy News segment it was reported that they saw teenagers through the window in the nearby woods. After this, the worried anon expectedly called the police. Most of the neighbors thought that they only heard fireworks instead of the aforementioned gunshots. They only found out once the police were knocking on their doors ready to interview them about the situation.

Once responders got to the scene, there was a juvenile who was reportedly shot and needed to taken to the hospital after the shooting. The victim is a young boy, 17 years old, and was rushed to the ER after police found he had many allegedly life-threatening gunshot injuries, he has reportedly succumbed to those injuries. According to a tweet the Portsmouth PD made, the case is ongoing, and more information about the case and suspects will be released as it comes.

After the confirmed death of the 17-year-old boy, there was a community protest organized by the neighbors nearby. They organized a R.E.S.E.T. walk to protest the murder and honor the death of the young man. A R.E.S.E.T. walk is a where the police go door to door to check on residents and see how they are feeling after the recent traumatic events. It was scheduled to happen on February 14th at 409 Cedar Lane near the 7-Eleven and across the street from the homicide scene. A city resident named Sharon Anderson has joined forces with the police to lead the R.E.S.E.T. walk. When asked why she wanted to help she replied that the young age of the victim was a big motivator, “I just wish things could’ve been different for him” she said during her interview.
