The holiday originally comes from Ireland and eventually diffused to the U.S. and other countries around the world but lost some it’ meaning as it was spread. They created this holiday to celebrate a man named saint Patrick who is the man believed to have brought Christianity to the Irish. He is an important man to Irish culture because he was kidnapped and enslaved when he was a teenager but went on to explain the holy trinity using the leaves of a shamrock. This is why shamrocks are used much now on the holiday almost like a symbol for St. Patrick’s Day because of how Saint Patrick used the shamrock to represent the holy trinity.
It is celebrated on the 17th of march because that’s the day Saint Patrick was believed to have died and this is how they are celebrating his contributions to the Irish.
