Power Rangers Movie Review
“GO GO POWER RANGERS!”, this song lyric is remembered by many who’s childhood weekends were filled with watching the hit TV show “Power Rangers.” The action packed show was about five teens who were chosen to protect the world against evildoers. The first show was aired August 28, 1993 and was instantly a hit. They soon became a national phenomenon and capitalized on that by also distributing toys and action figures. In 2017, we finally have a remake movie of the beloved Power Rangers, directed by Dean Israelite. The movie takes place in “Angle Grove,” the original home to the 1993 heroes, and is set in present day. All is normal in Angel Grove until 5 teenagers stumble upon the ancient hiding place of the Power Ranger coins. The teens become peculiarly powerful. Later they find a giant ship buried underground and we meet Zordon, the all-knowing veteran power ranger who died millions of years before, but whose spirit still lives in the ship. Our heroes soon learn that they must protect the world from the evil ranger, Rita, whose name is also recycled from the original TV series.
The cast was remarkable in this film. Cast members included Naomi Scott(Pink Ranger), Dacre Montgomery(Red Ranger), Elizabeth Banks(Rita), Ludi Lin(Black Ranger), Becky G(Yellow Ranger), RJ Cyler(Blue Ranger), Bryan Cranston(Zordon), Bill Hader(Alpha 5). The cast and the writers all did an amazing job of keeping the film serious as well as keeping it light enough for the children in the audience.
The costumes and graphics were captivating. The futuristic items that seem so ridiculously surreal were brought to life on screen. The graphics team made the Rangers gear super hard-core. Their costumes resembled robots with a motive to destroy their competition. Unlike the TV show in the 90’s, the movie made far out scifi completely believable and compelling.
The only negative thing I would have to say about this film is that the creators had the opportunity to make one of the greatest films in history, but did not. There were many opportunities for improvement that the writers did not take advantage of. For example, the plot of the movie could have gone slower, and there could have been more fighting action. The ending was nothing to write home about because it was pretty predictable, but it was not terrible. I am hoping that the next movie, which is definitely going to happen, will have more action and more shots of the Rangers when they are “morphed”.
