The Home Edit strives to marry style with function

While home organization is nothing new The Home Edit on Netflix has taken it to a whole new level. “The Home Edit” is a company based out of Nashville TN with offices all across the country from LA to NYC. The company specializes in helping organizing your home whether it be a messy closet or an out of control playroom, through their in house organizing team, bestselling books, and organizational containers. Through each episode of the series Clea and Joanna tackle the messy spaces of celebrities and ordinary people alike. Whether it’s Khloe Kardashian’s garage or a doctor’s messy closet, their method is tried and true. One of the appealing aspects of the Home Edit’s method is its applicability to any situation. “I love how you don’t need their exact items. You can use an old cardboard box to create a beautiful organization system” commented Skyler Smith an avid lover of organization.

The Home Edit has a Netflix original series, working with celebrities and average people. The second season debuts April 1st.

The first step in their process is to assess the situation; taking stock of the space that is available and the amount of items that are contained. After the project scale is realized it’s time to edit, taking everything out of the space and determining what is a keep, relocate, or donate it’s time for the real fun to begin. Clea and Joanna’s method involves making a designated “zone” for each function you want the room to serve. If you have a closet you’re organizing make a zone for each season and then if you have special categories like costumes.

Tip: A system works best if you work with your routine rather than against, if you keep all your jewelry in one spot keep it there, just organize it to work better for you!

Once you’ve edited and made a plan it’s time to get your hands on some product, organizing tools ranging from acrylic boxes to wicker baskets, the product allows you to organize your things in a beautiful, dust free way, and to keep yourself from outgrowing your space with excess items. While putting all your belongings away neatly is important, it’s equally important to know what is in each container through labels or clear acrylic shelving. Finally it’s time for finishing touches, make sure to give each item it’s own space and let things breathe rather than cram it in, and rainbow order is always the way to go.

The Home Edit’s method of clear bins is great for keeping things organized. By categorizing my items I can easily find anything in my desk without digging through junk

After watching Clea and Joanna do this with such ease, I decided to tackle a project myself and see if I could apply the same method to my desk drawer. I cleaned out and sorted all the junk throwing away the trash and keeping the rest. I then bought some clear organizers and sorted my belongings into their designated categories. At the end I was left with a beautiful and organized space that made it pleasant to spend time at my desk, and a joy to do work. Organization acts as means of taking control of things you can so you can make peace with what you can’t
