2017 Grammy Nominations Lead to Body Shaming

User on twitter body shames Demi Lovato

The Grammies are a celebrated event that many people enjoy. On December 6th, the 2017 Grammy nominations were released to the public. This information took many by surprise, and caused many people to rejoice or be upset over the results. Online, there were many different opinions about the nominations for the Grammies, and some posts on Twitter offended many people.

The nominations for “Best Pop Vocal Album” included 25 by Adele, Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande, Purpose by Justin Bieber, Confident by Demi Lovato, and This Is Acting by Sia. After the news was released, a close friend of Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, congratulated her on social media. However, after Selena Gomez’s memorable comeback, some people believed that she would be nominated for a Grammy instead of Lovato. An anonymous Twitter user tweeted the opinion that Demi would be nothing without Selena, and even went as far as to say, “Without Selena she’s a fat pig who would be at home with nothing and nobody to love her.” Moments after posting this, a large number of people became offended by the hate displayed towards such a talented singer. Another twitter user, Katelyn Pyke, describes her opinion of the situation, “I’ve always looked up to Demi Lovato for not only how amazing she is in the music industry, but for how confident she is with her body. When I saw the post that a grown woman made because she was upset that her favorite artist wasn’t nominated for a Grammy, I lost it. She not only disrespected Demi about her career, but she called her a ‘fat pig’ as well, which is extremely rude.” The intense body shaming in the post was also called “pathetic” and “immature” by other Twitter users.

Although this conflict created a negative atmosphere around the Grammies for some people, this event should still be joyous and celebrated. After receiving so many negative replies on the post, the user deleted their harsh comment. The extent that some supporters go to in order to defend their favorite singer can be over the top, and body shaming is not acceptable under any circumstances.
