Brighton Beach Memoirs Review
“I’ve seen the golden palace of the Himalayas”, Eugene said as he held up his notebook in one hand while he looked at the audience. As the lights went down the actors went to their places and bowed one by one, when they all got up they pointed to the booth so stage crew would also be recognized. The director, Mrs. McCory, did her thesis show Brighton Beach Memoirs by: Neil Simon for her master’s degree.
Brighton is a comedic semi-biographical script and book which is about a family in the 1930’s, when World War II hit. It is the story of an extended family forced to live together and tells about how they lived together through the family’s struggles. The mother works to help and manage the family while the father has two jobs and health problems and earns the money for the family. Everyone has an issue, and living together is no picnic either.
The performances (See cast list below) were truly beautiful, astonishing. There were some stumbles here and there but the actors always stayed in character. The lights lit up the stage perfectly as they faded on the last bow, all handled professionally by the stage crew. The sets were convincing and very detailed radio. Mrs. McCory’s directing made the show worthy of a New York production, professional in every way. All in all, Brighton was well worth the ticket price!
