November 12, 2017 is a day no Vols fan will forget. Tennessee’s fifth year football coach Butch Jones has been fired. In his place, defensive line coach Brady Hoke will be serving as the interim head coach. The next head coach will be the Vols will be the fifth head coach in the past 11 years.

Jones had an approximately $8 million buyout. He was making $4.11 million while he was at Tennessee, but now he is owed $2.5 million per year remaining on his deal. The buyout will be reduced by the salary he may earn at his new coaching job.

During Jones’s time at the school, he guided the Vols to nine-win seasons in 2015 and 2016. Jones overall record at Tennessee was 37-27.

This season has been grim, the Vols have gone 4-6. One of this season’s biggest upsets was the loss to Kentucky. It was only the second time in the past 33 years that Tennessee has lost against them. Fans were especially upset after the Vols lost at home to Georgia, falling 41-0 in the biggest loss in Neyland Stadium history.

Jones has been extremely unpopular with the fan base. Fans started a “#FireButch” campaign, which spread like wildfire. Signs with the hashtag were popping up at hockey games and College GameDays. Fans have even gone as far as to creating GoFundMe pages to buyout Jones’s contract themselves. Tennessee fans are excited for the new change heading their way.
