St. Patrick’s Day, also known as St. Patty’s Day for short, is the holiday that takes place on March 17th that people often associate with drinking and partying. The traditions and customs of St. Patrick’s Day have derived much from the way it used to be celebrated and the origin of the holiday.

The shamrock serves as a symbol or representation of St. Patrick’s Day, and you are sure to see a lot of these around on this day.

It has become a fun and family-friendly holiday for kids with the creation of leprechauns and the myths that people make about them to entice young children. The stories and myths of leprechauns come from folklore, and they are similar to fairies or other mythical creatures used to make the holidays more enjoyable for little kids. The color associated with St. Patrick’s Day is green because it is the color of the shamrock, and the shamrock is very important to the origin of St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland. Now People often celebrate the holiday of St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green and many go out drinking to commemorate the day. There’s a saying that if you don’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day then someone can pinch you and now it has become a tradition to wear green on the holiday.

As a way of celebrating in the U.S. we die the Chicago River green, and the people get to enjoy it for St. Patrick’s Day. In Ireland it was celebrated as more of a religious holiday up until recently where they discovered they could use this holiday to encourage tourism and represent their country to others around the world. There are many foods associated with St. Patrick’s Day like Irish soda bread, corn beef, cabbage, and champ that people use as a way to celebrate the holiday. The way St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Ireland vs North America and other countries around the world is still very different because we don’t celebrate the religious aspect of it like the Irish do. Most probably don’t know the real origin of St. Patrick’s Day or the reason, we celebrate it.

This stained glass window depicts Saint Patrick, the man credited with introducing Christianity to the Irish and the reason we celebrate St Patrick’s day.

The holiday originally comes from Ireland and eventually diffused to the U.S. and other countries around the world but lost some it’ meaning as it was spread.  They created this holiday to celebrate a man named saint Patrick who is the man believed to have brought Christianity to the Irish. He is an important man to Irish culture because he was kidnapped and enslaved when he was a teenager but went on to explain the holy trinity using the leaves of a shamrock. This is why shamrocks are used much now on the holiday almost like a symbol for St. Patrick’s Day because of how Saint Patrick used the shamrock to represent the holy trinity.

It is celebrated on the 17th of march because that’s the day Saint Patrick was believed to have died and this is how they are celebrating his contributions to the Irish. He is known to be the man who introduced Christianity to the Irish while he was kidnapped and enslaved as a teenager and now, we celebrate him all around the world.
