The past month with the United State’s new POTUS has undeniably thrown everyone in a frenzy. From seemingly sporadic executive orders to Donald Trump’s blatant immaturity, it has definitely been a whirlwind. In the short time span of a month, Trump seems to have done it all: bashing the media for not being honest, attending nuclear strategy sessions, and inappropriately handling foreign relations are at the very forefront of some of the messy problems the presidents been dealing with.

His address to congress concluded his first month, and while it was impressively more presidential than any of his past speeches, it doesn’t come close to making up for the past month. The address was approximately an hour long, with 84 pauses for congressional applause. The President kept constantly saying “We want American to be successful again,” but we all know that the America which was implied, favors white, middle class citizens. The President made mention of his wall, the defunding of sanctuary cities, the “extreme vetting” referred to earlier this month, and Islamic terrorism in America, but still doesn’t seem to have a solid plan. He did state that lower income families will be able to make the jump to middle class families soon, and while that would be fantastic for the quality of life in America, what are the plans for reaching this?

Everything attributed to the Obama administration and prior is described as a “tragic disaster,” but without a road map on how the disasters will be fixed, how can anyone trust Donald Trump? He did give his reasoning and plans in terms of repealing and replacing Obamacare, and the promises of making sure no citizen is left out is a nice thought. He talks about a lot of problems in America, like drug abuse, the need for better education, and immigrants taking jobs, but without offering a good solution, his promises to get the job done and fix the issues at hand means nothing.

Straying from the contexts of the address, Donald Trump did much better job of staying on script and reducing the unstructured babbling of his usual speeches. As a citizen of the United States, I am hopeful the future for this nation is bright, but Donald Trump’s un-presidential qualities and lack of compassion makes the majority of the nation skeptical.
