Rams Upcoming Soccer Season

Spring sports are coming fast for the Lafayette Rams.  Most sports have tryouts beginning on February 20.  Among these sports is the boys’ soccer team.  The soccer team is coached by Brian Sorrell, who is also the assistant football coach and English teacher at Lafayette High.  Sorrell is a determined soccer coach who has yet to get his team a state title, but has come close numerous times and has had winning seasons every year he has coached.  This season the Rams will face many obstacles and challenges, none of which will keep the Rams from battling until the clock runs out.

“We always say that the previous team sets the standard” – Coach Sorrell aims to exceed the team’s performance from last year.  But to do so he must get over the obstacle of not having his star player, Reeves Trott, who was the team’s captain and top scorer last year.  Sorrell states, “We need a goal scorer, we definitely need a goal scorer, and we need a goal keeper…there’s some young kids coming up that I can see doing that.”  Sorrell mentioned Lucas Elder as one of the offensive players who “like to score.”  But he believes the defense of the team is what will win games, “I think we’re going to keep a lot of teams from scoring.”  Sorrell said the close knit and relationship of the team is what will make them stand out and be able to beat the teams that they need to get past to make it to states.  When asked about what he will be focusing on this season, Sorrell stated, “I’m gonna focus a lot more on training…and stretching…we were plagued with injury last year so we’ve already started the preseason trying to focus on how to prevent injuries and making sure our muscles are properly prepared before we start training.”  The Rams have begun preseason workouts and are already working hard to be the best they can. Coach Sorrell and the Rams soccer team will be a tough competitor in the Bay Rivers District in the 2017 season.
