A weird year.

A year dominated by social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Snapchat.

A year characterized by political unrest across the country.

However, I’m not here to talk about any of the super serious stuff. Instead, I’d like to direct your attention, dear reader, to a fairly recent development that many people, including myself, find really out of the blue to say the least. Celebrity and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian and comedian entertainer Pete Davidson have come out as a couple. Many fans have questioned the relationship, claiming that they’re both from way too different of social backgrounds with Kardashian being far out of Davidson’s league.

So who exactly are these two scrutinized stars? Kim Kardashian, a 41 year old Californian socialite and billionaire, made her fortune through her luxury clothing and cosmetics brands. In addition, one of her parents, Caitlyn Jenner, is an American Olympic athlete who won gold in the 1976 Olympics in the decathlon event. She also has 5 siblings:  Kourtney Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Robert Kardashian Jr., Kendall Jenner, and Kylie Jenner, each one also doing incredibly well for themselves as well.

Pete Davidson, on the other hand, is a 28 year old New York native. He found fame waiting for him by scoring various gigs on the popular channel MTV before landing other TV appearances on shows such as Failosophy, Guy Code, and PDA and Moms. He is now a dedicated cast member on late night comedy sketch show, Saturday Night Live.

Kardashian and Davidson weren’t always together, however. Ariana Grande, yes the Ariana Grande, was Davidson’s short term girlfriend turned fiancée. Grande and Davidson had begun dating in May 2018 before getting engaged a mere one month later. However, the two eventually called it quits in October of the same year. Kardashian and acclaimed yet controversial Kanye West were married in May of 2014 and maintained as healthy a relationship that celebrities can with four children. So what exactly broke up that seemingly perfect 7 year marriage of theirs? According to various sources including popular news site Evening Standard , she cited a large fight that the couple had in December of 2020 that really solidified her decision of breaking up with her ex-husband. She then filed for divorce in February 2021, citing “unreconcilable differences” as the reason.

How did this unlikely pair meet in the first place?

The two actually first met in person at rapper Kid Cudi’s birthday part in late January in 2019 but their first public interaction wouldn’t occur until nearly 3 whole years later when Davidson and Kardashian appeared on SNL, playing Aladdin and Jasmine respectively. They even shared an on screen kiss which definitely aroused some suspicion about the true nature of their supposed “friendship” amongst viewers.

To add even more suspicion to this odd series of events, Kardashian and Davidson attended a themed amusement park called Knott’s Berry Farm located in Buena Vista, California together. The two had a great time at the park along with some family and friends including Kourtney Kardashian, her fiancé Travis Barker, Tracy Romulus, Romulus’s husband, Stephanie Shepherd, Harry Hudson, and a few other recognizable celebrities.

Everything isn’t dandelions and daisies, however. There has been opposition to the couple from millions of people worldwide and even Kanye West himself, who seems to be less than thrilled with Kardashian and Davidson’s relationship. Internet rumor has it that West even wants Kardashian back out of apparent jealousy although nothing is confirmed yet. Kardashian, in contrast, seems to have absolutely no real ill will toward her ex-husband. Ariana Grande has also moved on from her past relationship with Davidson (she is now married to luxury realtor Dalton Gomez) and considers the two a cute couple. Surprisingly, both Kardashian and Davidson have been very quiet about their relationship on social media, particularly Instagram. It seems that they’re doing their best to keep internet sleuths at bay which is very understandable.

Lots of locals here at Lafayette High School had their own opinions on the pairing. Grace Oldenburg, a junior and passionate hater of both Kardashian and Davidson, said, “I personally do not like the pairing that much due to the fact that she (Kardashian) has different occupations and Davidson, who I think isn’t well liked by the public, is with someone who is liked.” Another LHS student, senior and teacher’s assistant Brian Hudson, commented, “I don’t even know what Pete Davidson does- don’t put that, that’s off the record.” When asked what was on the record, he continued by saying, “I don’t care that much. I don’t care about celebrity drama.”

Love them or hate them, Kardashian and Davidson have found potentially lifelong partners. However, only time will tell whether they’re a dream couple or a disaster waiting to happen.
