Players around the league pay tribute to Jose Fernandez by reppin’ his initials and number on their hats.

In the first round of the 2011 MLB draft a new prospect was picked 14th by the Florida Marlins. Jose Fernandez made his debut on April 7th 2013. Fernandez was an outstanding pitcher for the Marlins. At age 24 he was already proving that he could be one of the best. With a career record of 38-17 he made it clear that he could dominate the teams he pitched against. His numbers showed he was one of the best with a 2.58 earned run average, 589 strikeouts in 471 innings pitched and a WHIP of 1.05 over the course of his career. This rookie was making a name for himself.

On September 25th, 2016 Jose Fernandez was involved in a boating accident with two other friends and was killed. With new information evolving, Fernandez was shown to have a great amount of cocaine and alcohol in his system. The young pitcher’s BAC was .147 which is extremely high compared to Florida’s legal level of .08. Jose Fernandez died from blunt force injuries to all parts of his body but primarily to the head.  As NL Rookie of the year in 2013, and an NL all-star in 2013 and 2016, this 24 year was just starting his extremely impressive career. As fans we hope to see stricter restrictions for the drug use in these young players, in order to prevent the drug use problem from continuing to happen with stars across all sports. Players around the league have payed tribute to him and he will be greatly missed.
