The sport of wrestling dates back to ancient times, but was first introduced to modern sports competitions in the year 1896 during the Olympic games in Athens Greece. The goal of the sport is to put your opponent down and pin them with their shoulder blades touching the ground. The same idea applies to modern day wrestling, with most high school matches running for 3 periods of 2 minutes each. The point system is relatively straight forward, with 2 points being awarded for a takedown, 1 point for escaping, 2 points for a reversal, 2 or 3 points for a near pin, and 1 or 2 points for penalties. It is an extremely physically demanding sport that is not for the weak.

Lafayette has their own wrestling team, whose work begins in the fall with pre-season conditioning. Junior Kevin Nguyem stated, “The pre-season conditioning was hard but I feel in shape and prepared for the rest of the season.” The Rams are now mid-season and showing progress. They finished 7th at a meet this past weekend and are gearing up for a dual meet this Wednesday. After this Wednesday’s meet the athletes will have a 19 day break and will compete again on January 3rd. The Rams wrestling team is looking to send a few athletes to the states finals. Junior Ben Dallman projects, “We have some athletes who are favored to go to states including, Kane Hurt, Kevin Nguyem, and Jordon Robins.” Come on out and support your Rams at the local dual meet this Wednesday!
