The third Captain America movie in the Marvel Series hit theaters on May 6, 2016. On the first day alone, the movie brought in $75.253 million dollars.  Since then the movie has brought in over $300 million dollars in revenue. The title “Civil War” caused much controversy because in past movies the Avengers assembled and fought as a team to save the world. It’s one thing to fall by the hand of an enemy but another to be stabbed in the back by a comrade. I saw the movie the weekend that it opened and in my opinion it is one of Marvel’s best films.

The story begins in West Africa, when the team is trying to steal an explosive serum from a band of terrorists that call themselves Crossbones.  This scene caused commotion as some viewers believed it to be a reference to the jihadist group called ISIS.  Directors Anthony and Joe Russo said they did not aim to make a film that directly reflects political events but they wanted the movie to raise question about current issues.  The movie is so genuine because the writers keep the story true to the climate of the time period in which it is set.  The first captain American film was set in the time of World War II, and true to form, the setting perfectly reflects the1940’s.

After a few flashy combat scenes and an intense game of cat and mouse, the Avengers manage to get the serum out of the hands of the Crossbones.  Unfortunately, they ended up blowing up a nearby building in the process.  When they return home they are greeted with insults and hatred.  The United Nations pays them a visit saying they must stop this destructive behavior and we find out that there have been other travesties caused by the Avengers.  They must sign their team over to a plan called the Sokovia team will be disbanded.   The accords state that they will be under the control of the international organization, and only allowed to work on cases it deems necessary, putting the team on a very short leash.  Some team members agree to the plan while others refuse and thus the divide begins.  The two sides of the conflict are represented by Iron Man and Captain America.   If you are familiar with Marvel comics you know that Captain America and Iron Man clash quite often, the directors made sure this was reflected throughout the film.

The film features some new characters and old favorites.  Almost all of the characters from the previous Avenger movies will be returning with the exception the Hulk and Thor.  I was a little disappointed because Thor and Hulk are my favorite characters, but after watching the film I realized that they would not fit into the plot,  because they are virtually indestructible.  If one of the mortal Avengers were to go head to head with either one of them, they would probably kill them.  Ant-Man made his second appearance in a Marvel movie, and his battle scene was epic.  Tom Holland plays the role of the new character,Spiderman.  Holland just celebrated his 20th birthday on

June 1.  Some viewers were shocked at how young the actor was. However, I believe it is good that they chose a younger actor for the role of Spiderman.  The previous Spiderman was played by Toby Maguire who started the role when he was 26 in 2002.   Maguire is now 40 and much too old to old to be swinging from buildings in several more movies.   By rebooting with a younger character they can ensure that he will be able to produce more movies for years to come. Tom Holland will be starring in a new Spiderman film in 2017, and it has been confirmed that pop-star Zendaya will also appear in the film.

The movie absolutely exceeded expectations.  It deserves five stars because it is beautifully put together and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.  I am still a dedicated Marvel fan and look forward to seeing more movies in the marvel series.  I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes action films.
